William's teacher, Mrs. Ogborn, had her class celebrate a Peace Tea for Martin Luther King, Jr's birthday. William had to memorize a line (In May of 1954, Martin became a preacher in a church in Montgomery, Alabama.), and he was very excited for me to come see him because there would be a surprise.
At the tea, the class marched into the room singing "We Shall Overcome" before they spoke their lines. Then they sang and performed sign language to a song called "Everybody's Talking 'Bout Peace." William was adorable with his exaggerated peace fingers and outstretched arms.
After the performance, the students sat at their tablecloth covered desks set with milk glass and china plates and cups (we adults had paper plates and plastic cups), and we were served cookies and tea or lemonade. Mrs. Ogborn took pictures of all the students and their parents. It was a lovely event.
Then Thursday, when the local paper came out, we were surprised to find ourselves on the cover! We heard from all sorts of people who saw the picture. We did feel rather special!
