William turned one on the 27th, but we had his party on Saturday. William seemed to know he turned one because on Wednesday, his birthday, he decided he was going to walk as his primary mode of transportation. He would crawl a little, but only if he needed to get somewhere fast. It is a week later as I am writing this, and he has pretty much given up crawling all together, and his speed of walking has increased dramatically. He also walked with his shoes on today. Okay, I know that sounds weird, but he really does hate wearing shoes, and all the books say it is best for children to be barefoot or at least have soft soled shoes as they learn to walk. Since we went to Joe's high school this afternoon and I knew William would be walking around those icky floors, I wanted real shoes on him. He had to learn to adjust for the extra height and bulk of his Nikes, but he figured it out and was zooming up and down the halls.
Now, back to the birthday party: we had a safari theme. The party favors were jungle animal rubber duckies and jungle animal beach balls. The beach balls also served as entertainment during the party. We also had pin the tail on the lion, a monkey photo op, chalk drawings in the driveway, monkey food (bananas), and elephant food (peanuts). There were three cakes designed after William's favorite board book based on Curious George. William ate his first piece of cake. He started off rather uncertainly, but after Mommy and Daddy pushed little bites into his mouth, he decided it was good after all and ate quite a bit.
