Piano lesson

OK, so not a lesson in playing the piano, but the family had a lesson in the structure of Mommy's grandmother's console piano. Mommy inherited it from Grandmama and moved it up here to NJ from SC about three years ago. When she opened it up to clean it, she found it was missing six hammers. Nothing was done about it until William started to show more interest in the piano. Mommy decided it was time to get the piano some TLC, so she got the name of a repairman. He came today and opened the piano up completely. He was impressed with the way the piano had held up (no rust, very clean inside) after being left alone in an empty house. He was most impressed that it is only a little out of tune after not being serviced for close to 10 years. He also liked that Grandmama had a climate control system installed. We are going to upgrade the climate control with a sensor light for the water level, and he has to reattach about 2/3 of the felts on the hammers. The tricky part is replacing the six complete hammers that he said must have been removed for repair and never replaced. The have to fit at the correct angle, and they have to be the correct size to avoid friction. We are hoping the hammers he has in his workshop, or possibly hammers some of his fellow repairmen have, will work because the manufacturers only sell complete 88 sets--they don't sell replacement parts. Keeping fingers crossed! Overall, he said it is a lovely, very nice piano that, with a little love, will be played by William's children. Then he took out the sound board and put it in the backseat of his car! No piano music for at least a month!
