We took William to his first movie in a theater on Saturday. We saw Cars 2, and he had a great time. Before we went, though, we went over some basic rules of theater going: no talking during the movie; you have to stay in your seat or the man with the flash light will "kick us out" (to which William replied, "Daddy, I'll kick him for you." So Daddy changed the phrase and said we would have to leave); we get to eat popcorn; there are previews before the movie--they are not the actual movie; we need to go to the potty before the movie starts because they don't stop the movie for us.
Daddy started going over the rules a couple of days before we went to out "surprise movie." We went over the rules one more time on the drive over Saturday morning. When we got to the potty rule, William said, "We need to bring the clicker." How absolutely funny, and yet so true. Why not take the remote control from home so we can pause the movie like we pause the TV?
When we walked into the theater, William was so excited! He loved the lighted stairs, and we positioned ourselves in our favorite seats, the ones behind the handicap bar so no one sits in front of us. William was afraid of the seats--he was afraid he was going to fall through the back when they tip up. He stood at the bar mesmerized during the previews, and then he asked to sit in my lap, where he stayed for most of the remainder of the movie. There were thirty minutes of previews and the Toy Story short that made the Cars 2 movie thirty minutes too long. William just got a little antsy at the end, but was still good. The funny part was after being antsy for the movie, he stared transfixed at the screen during the final credits. I think he enjoyed listening to the song, and the animation switched to more traditional animation.
It was a great experience for a first movie!
